Alpha Delta Student Service and Leadership Awards: Nominations are now open
By: Sara Linton
The Alpha Delta Service and Leadership Awards were created in 2003. The name is based on the Greek words Archaein (are-cain) or "to lead" and Diakonein (dee-ak-o-nane) or "to serve"-extremely appropriate for our servant leadership approach to these activities. These awards recognize all students who have excelled in service and leadership during their tenure at HNU.

The awards include both the Athletic and Alpha Delta Leadership awards. Please follow this link to the nomination page:https://community.hnu.edu/NetCommunity/SSLPage.aspx?pid=363

Students, faculty, and staff are able to nominate as many students as they feel are deserving of the award.

This year's Alpha Delta Student Service and Leadership awards banquet will be held on Thursday, April 29, 2010, at 5:30pm in the Public Market. The focus of this year's banquet will be student involvement. The call was put out to the Arts and Humanities Department for student work to display during this year's banquet. Student photography, paintings, poems, stories, drawing, and cereamic creations, as well as pictures from student-lead events and activities, will all serve as centerpieces for the evening's celebration.

Every detail of the 2010 Alpha Delta Awards will be inspired by student service and leadership. Carmel Crane in the Arts and Humanities Department has presented her class with the task of creating the design for the evening's program. All students in the class will have the opportunity to have their work showcased on various program covers.

If you have pictures from student-centered events or athletic events, or displayable work that you would like to contribute to the Alpha Delta Student Service and Leadership Awards, please contact Laili Samori (laili_samori@my.hnu.edu).Thank you for encouraging and helping to reward the students who have excelled in service and leadership! If you have any questions, please contact Sara Linton (linton@hnu.edu). And don't forget to submit your nominations here no later than Thursday, April 8, 2010.

What's going on at HNU this week - March 15, 2010

A Successful Senior Series
Budgets, dress shoes, yoga and social networking – what does this string of seemingly disparate things have in common? Each was part of a larger agenda addressed at the first ever HNU Senior Series. As the Class of 2010 strives to finish the last of its classes, it is life beyond diplomas that the Senior Series sought to shine a guiding light upon. Sessions developed around practical life issues ranging from how to balance responsibilities and stress, to knowing what it takes to prepare for a successful apartment hunt, were covered by a collection of experienced professionals who generously gave of their time and knowledge. The highlight of the week came at the beginning of the Series when Kelly Miyahara of the Jeopardy! Clue Crew and Tristan Sakura, Manager of Assurance Learning and Education at PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP, enthused the student crowd with a customized Jeopardy! game and shared life lessons. Students had the opportunity to not only glean the knowledge base that the weeks’ professionals set out to convey, but more importantly, they were able to start to put the pieces together for goals which had not previously been a part of their post-college plans. Strong attendance at each session solidified the event as a success and you can bet that the second installment in April will set out to meet this inaugural week’s expectations.

Stay tuned for the next installment of the Senior Series events! During the week of April 5-9th, session topics will include: Credit, Mock-interviewing, Healthy Living, and a night of networking with HNU Alumni at a mixer that will be co-sponsored by the Office of Alumni Relations, ASHNU and the Student Success Center.

The Senior Series Event has been brought to you by the Student Success Center, the Office of Campus Life and the Office of Admissions. A special thanks goes out to Epicurean for generously donating all of the food for the Senior Series sessions.

Student Center Campaign Exceeds Goal!
The Office of Institutional Advancement is proud to announce the upcoming official dedication of the new Student Center on March 25, 2010. The new Student Center in Brennan Hall was created with the idea of promoting academic, social, and civic engagement to our diverse student populations. The capital project campaign to renew the first floor of Brennan started in the spring of 2008 with a goal of fundraising $1.25 million. The campaign goal was eventually upgraded to $1.61 million to include additional projects, such as the creation of the Technology Support Center. Thanks to the generosity of loyal alumni, donors and friends, HNU raised over $1.8 million towards this project. The overall transformation of Brennan Hall now accommodates all students with resources essential to their success and empowerment and creates a much-needed facility that integrates and expands student services while improving campus life. The Student Center, which aligns with the student engagement goals outlined in our 2007-2012 Strategic Plan, includes: a café that provides quality food and beverages during extended hours; lounge spaces and areas that create opportunities for both academic and social interaction for students, faculty and staff; access to business support services such as copiers, printing and expanded bookstore operations; a renewed St. Francis Courtyard landing; access to services that support student success, such as the Learning and Tutoring Centers, Career and Health Centers, and a new Center for Civic Engagement and Service Learning; and the services of the Technology Support Center.

The Technology Support Center (TSC) is a major component of the Student Center. This new facility will transform the current campus computing environment by integrating multi-platform technology, consolidating computer services and providing mobile computer technology. The TSC will meet four critical goals: consolidate academic computing services in one location; provide integrated multi-platform technology that promotes academic collaborations; offer a dedicated space that can be transformed into a conference room for special faculty instructional workshops or seminars; and provide mobile computer technology to every student.

The official opening of the facilities and dedication ceremony of the new Student Center and the Technology Support Center will take place in the J.M. Long Foundation Student Lounge starting at 3pm on Thursday, March 25, 2010.If you would like to RSVP for this event, know more about current and future projects of the Office of Institutional Advancement or would like to support the university, please contact Ricardo Marquez at marquez@hnu.edu or (510) 436-1245.

Hawks Take On Chargers in First Round Of Nationals
It will be a game of top offense vs. top defense

Oakland, CA – The Hawks gathered in the dining hall this last Wednesday looking to see who they would face in the first round of the NAIA DII National Tournament Championships. They waited till the last pool was announced to hear that they will be facing the Chargers of Briar Cliff University.

For the second year in a row the Hawks will open with the team that has the national leading scorer. The Chargers Liz Grider is a 5’11” guard and is averaging 25.94 points, 5.19 rebounds, 3.22 assist and 2.75 steals per game. Grider has attempted more free throws than the Hawks’ two best guards combined at 275 attempts. She is shooting 46% from the field, 38% from the three point line and 78% free throw line. Grider has scored a season high 46 points in a loss to Northwestern College IA, and on four other occasions has scored 35 or more points in a contest.

The Chargers have two other players scoring in double figures. Sophomore forward Megan Slacedo and junior forward Morgan Brown add 12.6 and 11.1 points respectively.

Briar Cliff University competes in the Great Plains Athletic Conference where there are 4 teams ranked in the top 25 including the #1, #3, #11, and #12 teams in the country.

As a team the Chargers are averaging 86.6 points per game while giving up 70 points. Just like the Hawks they have a 16 point win margin on the year. Briar Cliff is currently top 10 in a few categories. They are #2 in scoring offense per game, #2 in steals per game (16.5), #2 in total steals (531), #2 in total scoring offense, and #5 in field goal percentage.Briar Cliff has relied heavily on Liz Grider scoring and will need to do so against a Hawk team that has proven to constantly put pressure. With Marie Vodicka, Lesley Vodicska, Jamie-Leigh Ronolo, and Danika Potestio to name a few, Grider and the other Charger guards will have their hands full.

Holy Names is led by junior guard Jamie-Leigh Ronolo with 13 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals per game. Player of the Year Lesley Vodicska also chips in with 9.52 points, 4.67 rebounds, 3.50 assist, and 4.47 steals per game. Vodicska is currently #2 in the country in total assists (139) and #3 in steals per game (4.47). The Hawks have average win margin of 18 points per game. They scored 74 points while holding opponents to a conference low 55 points per game.

The Hawks have had success due to some pretty impressive stats that show up in many categories nationally. Currently Holy Names ranks #4 in field goal percent defense (34%), #7 in total steals (425), # 9 in steals per game (13.21), #8 in 3 point field percent defense (27%) and #17 in turnover margin (4.9).

This game will come down to weather the Hawks can slow down Grider. Holy Names will be deep at the guard position and each one has speed! If the Hawks can slow down Grider they will have an opportunity to win.Briar Cliff final ranking was #8 in the country and the Hawks were #23. The Game will take place Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 7pm (5pm California time).

The game can be watched on line at: http://naia.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl-div2/2010Championship.html

Make sure you support your Hawks!

News from Abroad!
Around 25 students participated in the recent STUDY ABROAD information fair. These students were eager to ask questions about studying abroad and took informational pamphlets for future reference.

In the 2009-2010 Oaxaca Immersion Group presentation, the class had a full house (around 75 people among students, family members, faculty and administration -including Sister Rosemarie- were present). The seven presenting students were from a variety of majors: Nursing, Religion, International Relations, Biology, Latin American & Latino/a Studies and Psycology. They presented different topics related to the experience in Oaxaca. Student Anjelica Zeno made a video that showed all the activities in which students got involved and was very funny with music in the background. After the presentation, students offered special gifts to Sr. Rosemarie and other members of the administration for their support to the program. They also served delicious Mexican food!

Hi parents and families!

Did you know that your stories, questions and comments can be posted on the Hawk Cast blog? Simply email your material to me (linton@hnu.edu) so I can post them and everyone can benefit!

A recent question I received in my inbox was about this semester's final examination schedule: When are final exams this term?

Well, the last day of classes is May 3rd and Study Day is on the 4th. Therefore, final exams will be from Wednesday, May 5th until Tuesday, May 11th.

Similarly, Spring Break will be here before we know it! The halls will close on Saturday, March 6th and will reopen on March 14th in time for classes to begin on Monday, March 15th.

Keep your questions and stories coming!
Happy Tuesday,
Sara
